Together (2024)

Together. We may not be perfect, but we're getting it done, and we're still standing...together.

In this painting, strength and stability are emphasized by the bilateral symmetry of these trees that have grown tall together, whose roots are surely intertwined and who have weathered many storms, I'm certain.

I was so taken by these trees last summer at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and I knew I wanted to capture the strength I saw in them. Unfortunately, the reference photo I snapped was underexposed and less than inspiring, so I turned up the color saturation, got myself a large canvas (24x30"), and laid down an underpainting of Pyrrole Red. Turning up the color volume suggests the Presence of a Bright Light that, while unseen, is surely evident.

This painting is dedicated to my husband, Art, as we close in on 33 years of marriage, and to my parents, who just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. It's a messy business, this marriage thing, and those of us entering it don't usually know what we mean when we say, "Sure, we're in this together--for better or worse!"--until the challenges start coming and we see where we end up.

Staying together has required a greater commitment than we could ever have imagined as we ventured out together all those years ago. As far as we're concerned, we would not be standing here, together, all these years later, unless the Lord were standing together with us, and by His grace we have remained rooted together in His love. I am humbled and grateful.
